Folk dance workshops are a popular way to step back in time to learn dances from the past. Or you can mix it up to make them more contemporary….

We went to see a great company perform last night called ‘Folk Dance Remixed‘. They are a ground-breraking company creating unique fusions of traditional Folk dance and contemporary Hip Hop dance!

Our International week dance workshops are really great for recognising all the different cultures and countries you have in a school. The UK is a mixture of so many different nationalities, which should be celebrated. It adds so much to our culture, and knowing about different places makes us more understanding and empathetic.

When we teach dance from around the world it makes students feel proud of their heritage, and it also gets everyone else educated on where other are are from.

Also dance is a great way to expand on a topic. We play lots of traditional music, and show costumes or photos of traditional dress relating to the dance style we are teaching.

Hampton Hargate School

We taught for three days at the end of last term at Hampton Hargate School in Peterborough. It’s the second year running we have taught some International Week dance workshops for them. They are a large school with three classes per year group. Each year group studies a different country during the week.

Our secondary school dance workshops are inclusive and engaging. We want to encourage more young people to stay fit and healthy, and dance is a great way to achieve that.

Our dance workshops can also be aimed at students who may want more of a challenge in dance, or are studying GCSE or A Level dance. We can tailor our workshops to suit your needs and requirements.

We recently taught some secondary school dance workshops at Pakefield High School in Lowestoft for their LE@P day (Learning Experience @ Pakefield). They are a new school, have only been open just over a year. They are already having amazing results with the students who have previously been ‘hard to reach’ in their other school.

South America is such a large and varied continent, so it has loads of different dance styles to try. During our South American dance workshops we talk first about the culture and history of the country and it’s dance. We show props and photos to make the subject come alive for the students.

We had a great day at Field Park School in Worthing this week teaching lots of South American dance workshops.

They are studying South America as one of the Olympic continents, so our workshops fitted in well with their theme.

In the run up to the 2012 Olympics, Zest has been doing loads of Olympics themed dance workshops in schools.

It is proving a really popular theme for schools wanting to tap into the event of the year. We feel really excited to live in London during the Olympics, it’s going to be crazy busy and full of activity.

Our director Olivia danced in front of the Queen at the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony in Manchester in 2002. It was one of the best experiences she has had, and great for the City. So we are really looking forward to this one in London.
