Inset dance sessions for teachers

Created for teachers who feel stuck teaching dance and need some guidance

We know how tricky it is when dance isn’t your chosen subject to teach but it is included in the PE curriculum. Don’t panic, we are here to help with our Inset dance sessions for teachers!

Take a look at a successful Inset afternoon we ran at a primary school in London…

There are plenty on online sessions to help. But as you can see from this video, nothing beats a face to face, step by step lesson on how to teach dance for different year groups.

Inset dance sessions for teachers:

We either run a session for teachers at the end of the day’s dance workshops with the children. So your Zest dance teacher could do a day’s workshop with the school, and then would stay on after school to do a session for your staff.
Or if it works better, we can come in on a separate date which suits your needs.
It will be a practical session so everyone needs to get moving. But we will also leave you with a print out of everything discussed in the session.

The format of the session looks like this:

  • How to deliver dance sessions for each key stage
  • How to warm up and cool down properly
  • Discussing different topics and themes for dance and how to teach them (let us know in advance if there’s a particular topic you want us to cover)
  • How to teach and break down dance sequences
  • Music ideas for you
  • Lesson planning and developing dances

Length of the Inset Sessions:

We can do 1hr, or 1.5hrs or 2hrs.
Of if you need a more intense session, let us know your requirements and we can work to that.

Costs of Inset Session:

It depends on how long you’d like a session. In the shorter sessions we condense everything, in the longer sessions we go more in depth and it’s a more practical session for the teachers. We keep it at a simple level, suitable for all abilities.

Video Evidence:

Take a look at the inset session we did for a primary school in London in the video above.
Their topic was ‘India’ and they wanted to find out how to teach Indian dancing for all year groups.
In the 2hr session, we gave them lots of facts on Indian culture, music and dance. Next we taught them basic Bhangra dance moves for the warm up, and how to do some simple Mudras (hand positions). Finally, we put a Bollywood dance routine together with them.
There was a section where they had to choreograph dance in pairs. So we helped them learn how to structure these sections and how to put moves together in an interesting way.
We think the end dance looks fantastic and i’m sure their students would love to see them perform it!
