Grab your Sombrero’s and try this traditional folk dance!
We celebrate Mexico by teaching their national dance, the Jarabe Tapatío ‘Mexican Hat Dance’.
It’s a dance which all the children learn from an early age in Mexico. So these workshops are great for Early Years and KS1 classes. We also adapt the dance to make it more of a challenge for KS2 classes.
It’s danced in partners as it was originally a courtship dance, so it’s a great way for children to work together and make new friends.
The dance tells the story of a man who gives up his most prized possession—his Sombrero.
We use the traditional song for the main dance routine, to give a true flavour of Mexico. We also use some up-tempo Mexican music which has a great beat and energy.
This dance originated in the 18th Century, but in the early 19th Century it was banned by the Spanish ruling class. They felt that is was immodest and suggestive!
Watching it today, it’s hard to see why it was banned – compared to what we are used to these days, as it’s very respectful and sweet.
Our Mexican Hat dance workshops are great for all ages and we can tailor the workshops for all abilities.
At the start of the workshops we talk to the participants about the different styles of Mexican dance and give a bit of background about the country.
We will show some photos of dancers dressed in traditional dress so your students can see what Mexican dancers would wear.
If you’d like any more info on our dance workshops, just let us know.
Why not treat your pupils to a dance workshop? We are based in London but have teachers across the UK to bring our workshops to you.
