Creative dance workshops
We had a fantastic day teaching some creative dance workshops at Trinity High School in Worcester.
We taught year 9, 10, 11 and the 6th form, mixed boys and girls. It was a day designed to inspire the students as they don’t do a lot of dance at the school.
They have a Performing Arts Championship competition coming up, and the teachers wanted to get the students excited about dance so that that element would be strong.
Each class had just over an hour for their creative dance workshop with Zest, and they were very focused and got loads done. We were impressed with their attitude and willingness to work hard.
Dance for keeping fit and healthy
At the start of each workshop we talked about the important of staying fit and healthy, not spending too much time on our phones/computers, and eating a balanced diet. We did a warm up and some strength and conditioning exercises. We also ended with a cool down and stretch of our muscles to ensure we wouldn’t ache the next day.
Contemporary dance
The Contemporary dance was challenging for them, especially for the boys. They had never done that style of dance before, and it was a hard concept for them to grasp. So we used long pieces of material as we find when people use a prop it gives them a focus other than just the movement, and it gives them lots of creative ideas. At the end of the dance we had taught, they got into groups and extended the dance themselves, and produced some lovely pieces.
Street dance
We also taught a Street dance workshop which they immediately engaged with. This style of dance is really popular as it uses familiar chart music, and is cool and funky.
Our Street dance routine was to Bruno Mars ’24K Magic’ which they loved.
They aren’t the best quality videos, they but give a taster of what they learnt!…
