African dance workshops
We were booked by Dartford Grammar School (for boys) to come in for a day of African dance workshops
They had a theme in the school of ‘The Lion King‘ and each year group were focusing on a different aspect of the film.
They were working for 4 days to put together a performance on the last day to family. There was singing, set design, music, art work, drama and we were doing the dance aspect.
Our fantastic teacher Francis Angol taught the African dance workshops to two different groups of 13rd old boys. He taught them two African routines and had a great time with the hard working students.
Workshop content
He began the workshops by talking about the history of African dance. He showed costumes and props that he had found during his time in Africa.
He did an intensive warm up, as African dance is a great work out.
African dance is very low to the ground, so it’s hard work – especially for you legs!
Lots of African dance moves have meaning and significance to them. So the students got to understand the meaning behind the movements.
The show went really well the following day and it was lovely to get this great feedback from the teacher who booked us….
“Francis was amazing!! It was really a fantastic day and the kids got so much from it. The African dance performance the day after was a huge success and they boys all remembered the dances well. Thank you so much for giving us the exact experience we were looking for. I look forward to working with you in the future.”.
